A local pilot and amateur photographer, Mr Thompson was part of the Flying Cockies team that also included locals Greg Ball and Michael Taylor in the Outback Air Race between Broome and Airlie Beach in Queensland last September.

Raising more than $10,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the three pilots in a Cessna 182 accumulated 9000 kilometres between Wagin and return and were awarded The Spirit of the Outback Award by the organisers.
